Sparkling Red Cherry Rum The Shining Recipe

Sparkling Cherry Limeade Cocktail

This was the cocktail that I created for the movie The Shining. You know, the whole 'RedRum" scene.

Obviously the cocktail needed to be red, and it needed to be made with rum.

I chose to do a boozy spin on a cherry limeade with maraschino cherries, lime juice, silver rum, and ginger ale. I also put black sugar on the rim to make it extra spooky!

With the black rim, this cocktail is perfect for Halloween. However, when the black sugar is swapped out with regular sugar, you got a new drink to add to your list of summer cocktails for a hot day! This is a super easy recipe so let's get to it!

Red Rum Cocktail Ingredients

✽ Maraschino Cherries: The cherries will be muddled. They will be the sweetener and bring in all that delicious cherry flavor!

✽ Lime Juice: The lime juice will add some tartness to the drink. It works perfectly to balance out the sweetness from the cherries and ginger ale. As always, freshly squeezed lime juice is best!

✽ Silver Rum: Of course, a red rum cocktail needs some rum! This silver rum (AKA- light rum or white rum) adds in our boozy element without an overpowering flavor. To get more cherry flavor, you can swap the silver rum with black cherry rum.

✽ Ginger Ale: The ginger all brings in those necessary bubbles to the limeade. It also adds another component to the flavor profile- ginger!

How to Make Sparkling Red Cherry Rum Drink

If you want to make it spooky, put a black sugar rim on it.

If you don't have black sugar, it's easy to make! Simply put about 1/4 cup of sugar into a jar. Add in a couple drops of blue, green, red, and yellow food colorings. Put on the lid and shake until the sugar is black. You may need to add more food coloring to get the color you want.

Then run a lime wedge along the rim of the glass, and dip the rim of the glass into the black sugar.

Sparkling Red Cherry Rum: Questions

✽ What are maraschino cherries?

Maraschino cherries are cherries that have been preserved and sweetened.

They are impregnated with sugar and dyed red. They are then put into a syrup with almond oil. Definitely don't eat these sweet cherries if you are looking for a healthy snack.

✽ I don't have ginger ale. What else can I use?

You can substitute the ginger ale with any lemon-lime soda.

You can also substitute sparkling water for the ginger ale. If that's the case, you may want to add little more sugar to the drink if you want it to be sweeter.

A little bit of cherry juice from the maraschino cherry jar or a little bit of simple syrup will do the trick.

✽ How to you make colored sugar for the rim?

Coloring sugar is easy! Ideally, you want a large grain sugar, but I usually just use regular sugar.

Put about 1/4 cup of sugar in a jar (make sure you have a tight-fitting lid for it). Add in a couple drops of food coloring, put on the lid, and shake until the sugar is colored. Keep adding drops of food coloring until you have your desired color.

For black sugar, I put a couple drops of blue, red, green, and yellow food coloring.

✽ Can I use fresh cherries for this cocktail?

Yes! If it's cherry season, you can swap out the jarred maraschino cherries for fresh cherries if that's what you have on hand. You could use red cherries or black cherries. You can also use defrosted frozen black cherries as well.

Just muddle the fresh cherries in the cocktail shaker as you would the maraschino cherries. If the fresh cherries do not add enough sweetness, you can also add a bit of simple syrup to the cocktail.
