This delicious blue cocktail was inspired by Sully from Monsters Inc. It's bright blue just like Sully's fur and the purple at the bottom of this cocktail resembles Sully's purple spots. This blue monster cocktail is a mixture of homemade lemonade, blue curacao, and silver rum. The red grenadine poured in mixes with the blue curacao to make a beautiful purple and blue drink. Perfect Halloween cocktail!

Monsters Inc Cocktail Recipe

Blue, Tangy, and Sweet Cocktail

This cocktail was inspired by Sully from Monsters Inc.! This movie is adorable and while it's not necessarily a Halloween movie, it's still all about monsters. Basically, I'll take any excuse to watch it again and sip on this delicious blue monster cocktail while I watch it.

The silver rum lemonade is made blue with blue curacao to resemble Sully's fur. A splash of grenadine is added so when you slightly mix the blue with the red, you get some purple to represent Sully's purple spots.

This is the perfect cocktail to sip on while watching Monsters Inc or for Halloween!

Lemon Juice: Freshly squeezed lemon juice will give you the best flavor! The lemon will add in a nice citrus and tang flavor that will help balance out the sweetness from the other ingredients.

✽ Simple Syrup: I don't like sugar granules in my cocktails so I use simple syrup instead. It's really easy and quick to make. I try to always have a jar of it sitting in my fridge.

✽ Water: Plain uncarbonated water in a cocktail?! I know, I know. But we are basically just making homemade lemonade then adding our liquor to that!

✽ Silver Rum: In order to keep the bright blue color of this cocktail, I used a white liquor. Rum was my favorite out of all the ones I tried!

✽ Blue Curacao: Blue curacao is an orange liqueur that makes this cocktail a bright beautiful blue and adds some great orange flavor.

Grenadine: The red grenadine is going to mix a little with the blue to make some purple to represent Sully's purple spots. It also adds a bit of flavor and some sweetness.

I usually go the no garnish route with this cocktail and instead use a fun 'Boo' straw. You could also garnish the rim of the glass with a lemon wedge or lemon slice.

How to Make Monsters Inc Cocktail: The Blue Monster

➊ If you don't already have some simple syrup in your fridge, you'll need to whip some up really fast.

In a small saucepan, add 1/4 cup of white sugar and 1/4 cup of water. Heat over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until the sugar granules are dissolved. Remove from heat just as soon as all the sugar granules are dissolved, and let cool. You don't want the mixture to boil!

If you want to make enough simple syrup to save in the fridge for later cocktails, you can just increase the sugar and water in a 1:1 ratio.

➋ In a cocktail shaker, pour in 1 ounce of the prepared simple syrup, 1 1/2 ounces lemon juice, 1 1/2 ounces white rum, and 1/2 ounce blue curacao. Add in a couple ice cubes, and shake about 10 seconds until chilled. Strain into cocktail glass with ice.

➌ Slowly pour 1/2 ounce of grenadine over the back of a spoon on the side of the glass. The grenadine should fall to the bottom. Slightly stir the mixture so the bottom of the drink is a dark purple and the top of the drink is still the bright blue color. Cheers!

Blue Curacao and Grenadine

Blue Lemonade Rum Cocktail: Questions

✽ What is blue curacao?

Bright blue curacao is a blue liqueur that is flavored with bitter orange laraha peel. The orange is found on the Dutch island of Curaçao, hence the name! The blue color really has nothing to do with its flavor. In fact, the liqueur is naturally clear. Its blue color comes from blue food coloring.

✽ What is grenadine?

Grenadine is a bright red syrup. It adds sweetness and a tad bit of tartness to cocktails. Most people assume that grenadine is cherry flavored, but it's actually pomegranate. Its name comes from the French word, grenade, which means pomegranate.

You can actually make your own homemade grenadine with pomegranate juice, sugar, and lemon juice.

What to Serve with a Blue Monster Cocktail

Monster Vegetable Tray; To keep up with the Monsters Inc. theme, serve this monster vegetable tray that looks like Mike Wazowski with the Sully-inspired cocktail!

Avocado Jalapeno Dip; This lemonade-based cocktail definitely needs a summer dip to go with it! The sweetness of this cocktail pairs perfectly with the spiciness of this dip.
