A spin on a traditional Boston whisky sour. This peanut butter whiskey recipe is made with peanut butter whiskey and egg white and topped with a simple homemade cherry sauce. When the cherry sauce is splattered, it makes for a great Halloween cocktail with delicious peanut butter flavor. This Scream-inspired cocktail also went perfectly with my Scream movie night!
Peanut Buttery, Tart, & Sweet
I created this cocktail to pair with the movie, Scream. My husband helped me brain storm this one, and he insisted that it needed to be a white cocktail with "blood." My brain went to a whisky sour.
Boston whisky sours are so much fun with the fluffy egg white on top, and the cherry sauce (AKA: blood) looked so great and spooky splattered on top.
I decided to go with a peanut butter whisky as I feel like it tastes more like fall, and the peanut butter & cherry sauce combination reminds me of a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. YUM.
Peanut butter whiskey drinks are starting to become my new favorite cocktails. It's also so good mixed with chocolate liqueur (for a peanut butter cup cocktail), banana liqueur, and coffee liqueur.
But for now, let's get into making this peanut butter whiskey sour!
What's in a Peanut Butter Whisky Sour?: Ingredient List

β½ Peanut Butter Flavored Whiskey: I've definitely jumped on that peanut butter whisky train. I'm not a big whiskey drinker, but I do enjoy straight peanut butter whiskey poured over a large ice cube. It's so delicious, a bit on the sweet side, and has all the deliciousness of creamy peanut butter. This peanut butter whiskey goes great with that cherry sauce we'll be making. My favorite brands are Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey, Sheep Dog, Skatterbrain, and P'Nutty.
β½ Lemon Juice: This provides a bit of tartness to the cocktail that will counteract the sweetness. Freshly squeezed lemon juice will give you the best tasting cocktail.
β½ Simple Syrup: If you don't have any simple syrup sitting in your fridge, don't worry. It's really easy to make! Hence the name.
It's one part sugar and one part water, and you just stir over low heat just until sugar is melted. If you just want to make enough for this cocktail, I recommend 1/4 cup sugar with 1/4 cup water.
Simple syrup can last about a month when kept in a tightly closed container in the fridge. So make more if you think you'll use it!
β½ Egg White: Added to make the cocktail foamy!
β½ Frozen Dark Sweet Cherries: We will force these dark sweet cherries through a sieve to get out the delicious dark red juice. When this cherry juice is combined with the peanut butter whiskey, it's like drinking a peanut butter and jelly cocktail.
31 Days of Halloween
This peanut butter whisky sour is a part of my 31 Days of Halloween. For each day in October, I come up with a cocktail recipe and snack recipe that perfectly matches a scary movie, Halloween movie, or a fun spooky activity. Check it out for all of your Halloween snack and drinking desires!
How to Make a Peanut Butter Whiskey Sour Cocktail Topped with Cherry Sauce
β To make the cherry sauce, thaw out 1/2 cup of frozen dark sweet cherries in the microwave for 2 minutes at 30% power.
You could also set out the cherries at room temperature for about an hour to thaw them. Force the cherries through a sieve into a bowl using a wooden spoon (warning: your spoon may turn red!). This is your cherry sauce!
β In a cocktail shaker, pour in 2 oz of peanut butter whiskey, 3/4 oz lemon juice, 1/2 oz simple syrup, and 1 egg white.
First, shake without ice for 15 seconds. Then add in a couple of ice cubes and shake again for 30 seconds. This will make the cocktail super foamy!
β Strain into a cocktail glass or lowball glass. The foam will settle to the top leaving you with a beautiful foam layer.
β Using a spoon, flick the cherry sauce on top of the foam. You could also do a design in the foam if you want! Cheers!
Peanut Butter Whiskey Sour: Questions
β½ Can I use regular whiskey instead of peanut butter whisky?
Yep, you absolutely can. That is a traditional Boston whiskey sour.
β½ What is a whiskey sour? History time!
A whiskey sour is a favorite among whiskey drinkers. It is a whiskey (usually bourbon whiskey) cocktail mixed with sugar and lemon juice. It's usual garnish is a maraschino cherry and an orange slice. Some say the very first mention of a whiskey sour was in the year 1870 in a Wisconsin newspaper. Others say it was in 1862 in a book written by Jerry Thomas called The Bartender's Guide.
However, others say that sailors invented the drink. Their water would usually go bad during the trip so they drank spirits instead. The lemon juice was added to prevent scurvy (deficiency of vitamin C).
β½ What's the difference between a whiskey sour and a Boston whiskey sour?
The egg white. A traditional whiskey sour does not have egg white so it doesn't have a frothy top.
β½ What's the point of the egg white?
Mostly for presentation purposes as the egg white is flavorless. It does, however, help a bit to decrease the acidity of the lemon juice and balance all the flavors together.
β½ Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey
The company, Skrewball, claims to be the first to produce peanut butter whiskey. They are based out of San Diego, CA and first put their product on shelves in July 2018.
The whiskey was created by Brittany and Steven Yeng. Steven fell in love with the flavor of peanut butter when arriving in Ocean Beach, CA, America after fleeing from Cambodia to escape Khmer Rouge. bar. And when paired up with his wife who is a chemist, they created the very loved peanut butter whiskey. It now can be found at almost every liquor store!
Scream Movie Night Ideas
β½ Cherry-dipped Vanilla Strawberries; To keep up with the Scream theme, make these blood-splattered & dipped strawberries. They are dipped in the same cherry sauce this cocktail uses!
