A shot of a delicious and strong pina colada.
If there is one drink that reminds me of summer it is a piña colada. It is the perfect cocktail for summertime and a favorite drink of mine. The fresh and sweet pineapple juice combined with coconut, tropical flavors, and Captain Morgan rum is just really hard to beat on a hot day and will make your taste buds so happy. These shots are absolutely perfect for summertime, pool parties, beach vacations, and for anybody that loves a good pina colada. Plus, they are really easy and quick to make which makes them great options for a big party. An easy way to guarantee a good time at your next party!

✽ Spiced Rum: While you could also used white rum or dark rum for these pina colada shots, I highly recommend spiced rum. Spiced rum adds in a nice sweetness with notes of vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg. It really makes these shots taste like tiki drinks with all those Caribbean spices. I used Captain Morgan Spiced Rum when making my shots.
✽ Pineapple Juice: I always think freshly squeezed pineapple juice tastes the best, but store-bought is also really good. I usually use Dole Pineapple Juice when making pina colada shots.
✽ Cream of Coconut: Cream of coconut adds in strong coconut flavors and sweetness. Make sure you are using 'cream of coconut' and not 'coconut cream'. I use the Coco Real Cream of Coconut when making cocktails and shots.
✽ Maraschino Cherries: Not only is adding a maraschino cherry to the rim of the shot glasses super tasty, it also adds in nice red color to make these shots so pretty.
✽ Pineapple Wedge: In addition to the maraschino cherry, add a small piece of fresh pineapple for looks and taste. You can also use canned pineapple or frozen pineapple as well.
How to Make Pina Colada Shots
➊ In a cocktail shaker, combine 1 ounce spiced rum, 1/2 ounce pineapple juice, 1/4 ounce cream of coconut, and a few ice cubes. Shake container until chilled, about 10 seconds.
You can also make multiple spiced rum shots at a time. Just make sure to keep the proportions the same.
If you skip the shaker part, you'll end up with a room temperature shot. It's not bad, but the chilled version is much better, in my opinion.
➋ Strain the pina colada shot into a shot glass. Garnish with a maraschino cherry and/or small pineapple wedge. Cheers!
Pina Colada Shots: Questions
✽ Can I use a different rum for these shots?
Yep. If you prefer light rum or dark rum, go for it! I choose spiced rum because I love the addition of the warm notes of nutmeg, vanilla, and cinnamon and hints of spice. It makes it taste like a tiki drink. Specifically, I like to use Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum for these tasty shots.
If you use coconut rum such as Malibu rum, it will still be a tasty shot just very coconut-forward.
✽ Why is my shot separating?
If you don't take the shots right away, the cream of coconut will begin to separate from the pineapple juice and alcohol. It will still taste just as good but won't look as consistent. If not taken immediately after shaking, the best way to ensure they are not separated is to give all the shots a quick stir prior to serving.
✽ Cream of Coconut vs. Coconut Cream
It is important to ensure you are using cream of coconut for this recipe and NOT coconut cream.
Coconut cream is unsweetened and thick. You may see some pina colada recipes call for both coconut cream and simple syrup. It works because the coconut cream gets fully mixed into the drink while in the blender. However, these shots are simply just shaken in a cocktail shaker so the coconut cream wouldn't give you the right consistency.
Cream of coconut is super sweet and like syrup. It is the perfect consistency for most cocktails and shots.
