Watermelon Jolly Rancher in a Jello Shot

The moment I tried watermelon vodka, I knew that I needed to make Jello shots with it. When watermelon-flavored vodka is combined with watermelon fruit juice, it tastes very similar to a watermelon Jolly Rancher. One of my favorite candy flavors!

These watermelon shots are the perfect party treat and great at a summer party, kicking it by the pool, at the beach, or to celebrate a long weekend. Jello shots are great options for parties because you can easily make them ahead of time.

This is a very quick and easy recipe to make with simple ingredients so let's get into it!

✽ Unflavored Gelatin Powder: I decided to use unflavored gelatin powder because the watermelon-flavored gelatin can be difficult to find sometimes. This way you won't have to rely on the store having the flavored Jello in stock, and you can make these any time you want!

✽ Watermelon Fruit Drink: I recommend using a flavored watermelon fruit drink for these shots. For mine, I used Minute Maid Watermelon. Tropicana Watermelon Juice Drink is also a good option. I do not recommend using fresh watermelon juice for these shots because it doesn't provide enough flavor or sugar.

✽ Watermelon Vodka: The watermelon vodka will give so much more flavor than plain vodka. Using watermelon vodka really makes these Jello shots taste amazing.

Some good options of watermelon vodka are Ciroc Vodka Summer Watermelon, Absolut Watermelon, Veil Watermelon Vodka, Western Son Watermelon Vodka, and Roberto Cavalli Watermelon Vodka.

✽ Watermelon Slices Candy: My favorite way to garnish the rim of the glass is with a Sour Patch Kids Watermelon Gummy. Another tasty candy is Watermelon Jolly Rancher Gummies. Not only does the garnish make these shots super cute, but it makes them even tastier! You could also garnish with a green sugar rim (to resemble a watermelon rind) or fresh watermelon slices or watermelon chunks.

➍ Pour watermelon gelatin mixture into 10 2-ounce Jello shot cups (or 2-ounce condiment cups). I like to place all of my shots on a baking sheet or cookie sheet so they are easier to transport. Place shots in the fridge for about 3-4 hours, or until set.

Best Watermelon Jello Shot Recipe: Questions

✽ Can I use regular vodka instead of watermelon vodka?

For the best tasting shots, I highly recommend using watermelon vodka. The watermelon flavored vodka makes them taste extra good and brings in a lot more watermelon flavor to complement the watermelon fruit juice drink. With that said, you can use plain vodka but the shots won't be as watermelon-y.

✽ Other Liquor Options

Another yummy option instead vodka is Malibu Watermelon Rum or white rum.

You can also replace the 1 cup watermelon vodka with 1/2 cup watermelon pucker (or watermelon schnapps) + 1/2 cup watermelon vodka for a more sour watermelon flavor.

✽ Can I add more vodka than the recipe calls for?

It is not a good idea to add more vodka than the recipe calls for because you may run the risk of the shots not setting properly. Stick with 1 cup vodka for best results.

✽ Can I use pre-packaged watermelon Jello mix?

Yes, but the method of making the shots will be different. You will not need the store-bought watermelon juice or the unflavored gelatin if you are using the watermelon Jell-O powder mix.

Here's how to make watermelon vodka Jello shots using Watermelon Jell-O powder mix- First, in a large bowl, add 1 cup of boiling water to 1 package of watermelon gelatin mix. Stir until all powder is dissolved, about 2 minutes. Stir in 1 cup of watermelon vodka. Pour watermelon jello mixture into 10 2-ounce plastic cups. Place in fridge until set, about 3-4 hours. If desired, garnish each shot with a watermelon gummy candy or any summer fruit. Enjoy!
