This Kiwi Sour Apple Moscow Mule may be may favorite cocktail ever. I made it for St. Patrick's Day celebrations because of its beautiful green color, but it's now become my favorite drink all year long. This moscow mule is made with kiwi puree, sour apple schnapps, and vodka. It's topped with delicious ginger beer for great flavor and to make it fizzy.

Kiwi Sour Apple Moscow Mule Cocktail Recipe

Kiwi, Sour Apple, & Ginger Moscow Mule

This cocktail was specifically made with St. Patrick's Day in mind. The kiwi puree and sour apple schnapps turn this Moscow mule the perfect green color and is the perfect addition to any St. Patrick's Day celebrations.

Although this cocktail was made for St. Paddy's Day, it is a real treat for any day of the year. It would be the perfect cocktail on a hot summer day or for those summer parties. The ginger beer and crushed ice make this fresh fruit drink so refreshing.

The ginger, kiwi, lime juice, and sour apple flavors work really well together. Outside of the taste, the best part about this cocktail is how quick it is to whip up. Let's get to this kiwi drink recipe!

✽ Ripe Kiwi Fruit: With the fresh kiwi, we will make a puree which will add natural greeness, sweetness, and a bit of tartness.

✽ Sugar: To tone down the tartness of this cocktail, a bit of sugar is added into the kiwi puree. Think of it like a kiwi simple syrup. I prefer this kiwi puree over muddled kiwi because it brings more kiwi flavor to the cocktail.

✽ Lime Juice: The most common recipe for a Moscow mule contains lime juice so I wanted to make sure that limes were kept in this recipe as well. The tartness of the limes pair so well with the kiwi and the sweetness of the ginger beer. Use freshly squeezed lime juice for best results!

✽ Sour Apple Schnapps: I first bought sour apple schnapps a few months ago, and I haven't stopped thinking about it since. I want to put it into every single cocktail I make. It's that good! As with the limes, the sour apple schnapps balances out the sweetness from the kiwi and ginger beer. It is the perfect way to add a tiny amount of sourness to the drink which makes this cocktail so addicting. A plus was that the green color of the schnapps just adds even more to the St. Paddy's Day fun.

✽ Vodka: A traditional Moscow mule is made with vodka so half of the liquor in this cocktail comes from the vodka. If you don't have vodka, white rum is a good substitute.

✽ Ginger Beer: The ginger beer adds in a strong ginger flavor which goes well with the other flavors in this cocktail. The sweetness from the ginger beer will balance out the tartness of the other ingredients, and the fizziness makes this drink so refreshing!

✽ Garnishes: I like to garnish my kiwi sour apple moscow mules with candied ginger, lime wedges, and kiwi slices.

How to Make Kiwi Green Apple Moscow Mules

➊ In a small saucepan, combine 2 roughly chopped kiwi, 2 tablespoons sugar, and 1 tablespoon lime juice. Place over medium heat until it begins to simmer.

Continue simmering for 5 more minutes, stirring occasionally. While it simmers, smash kiwi pieces with the back of a spoon to get out the kiwi juice.

βž‹ Remove kiwi mixture from heat, and pour into a blender or a food processor. Puree mixture until smooth.

*Always be careful with blending hot liquids. The mixture doesn't have to drop all the way down to room temperature, but let it cool a bit before blending. Never fill a blender more than halfway when the mixture is hot.

Also remove the cap from the blender lid to allow the steam to escape while blending. You can cover the hole in the lid with a kitchen towel in case some of the mixture flies out of the blender.*

➌ Time to assemble the cocktails! In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 ice cubes, 2 ounces kiwi puree, 2 ounces sour apple schnapps, and 2 ounces vodka. Shake until chilled, about 10 seconds.

➍ Fill two copper mugs halfway full with crushed ice. Strain half of the cocktail into each mug.

➎ Top each mug with 4 ounces of ginger beer. Garnish with candied ginger, lime wedges, and/or a slice of kiwi. Cheers!

Kiwi Sour Apple Moscow Mule: Questions

✽ What is a Moscow mule?

A traditional Moscow mule is a cocktail that is made with Smirnoff vodka, ginger beer, and fresh lime juice. It's typically garnished with a lime wedge.

✽ Why are Moscow mules served in copper mugs?

John G. Martin, one of the alleged creators of the moscow mule, was traveling through the US to sell Smirnoff vodka in hopes that he would also popularize Moscow mules.

He would ask bartenders to take a picture with a copper mug and a bottle of Smirnoff. He would take one copy of the picture and leave one copy behind for the bartender to hang up in the bar.

He would then take his copy and show it to the next bartenders as his proof that Moscow mules were popular among lots of other bartenders.

The copper mug just stuck and is still very common today to see Moscow mules served in copper mugs.

✽ What is sour apple schnapps?

Sour apple schnapps is a liqueur that has strong Granny Smith apple flavors. This liqueur makes a perfect mixer for many cocktails. Two popular brands are DeKuyper Sour Apple Pucker Liqueur and Mr. Stacks Sour Apple Schnapps.

Non-alcoholic Drinks

While you will be missing out on that delicious sour apple flavor if you go the non-alcoholic route, there are some options for you.

To make this a virgin cocktail, simply leave out the sour apple schnapps and the vodka, and add a bit more ginger beer. You could also muddle some mint leaves in your cup prior to adding the drink for extra deliciousness.
