Red White and Blue Jello Shots Recipe

All of the Fourth of July fun inside of a Jello shot.

Nothing quite says party like fun, festive, and tasty Jello shots! I'm sure by now you've seen red, white, and blue Jello shots posted all over the internet. I'm by the far first one to post a recipe for them.

However, if you're anything like me, you get kind of weirded out by the white Jello layer. Usually, the white layer is the middle layer that consists of sweetened condensed milk that has been gelatinized. While it doesn't necessarily taste bad, I'm just not a fan. Maybe I've had one or two too many Julia Child aspic recipes to make me a gelatin skeptic.

So, when making red, white, and blue Jello shots, I like to leave out the white layer and just top with some whipped cream. Not only do the shots taste scrumptious this way, they are a lot quicker and easier to make!

This festive Jello shot is perfect for any summer party, a day out by the pool, kicking off a long Labor Day weekend, for a Memorial Day party, or celebrating at a 4th of July party!

✽ Cherry Gelatin Powder: Using a flavored gelatin powder instead of unflavored gelatin really brings in a lot of flavor to these shots and makes them a bit easier to make! The cherry Jello will be the red jello layer and first layer of the shots. You could also use strawberry Jello as the red layer instead.

✽ Berry Blue Gelatin Powder: This gelatin will make the blue layer of jello for these shots. The berry blue pairs really well with the cherry Jello used for the red layer.

✽ Boiling Water: The boiling cup of water helps ensure that the gelatin powder dissolves so there are no clumps in the final Jello shots.

✽ Berry Vodka: When making Jello shots, I like to use a flavored vodka instead of plain vodka. This brings in so much more flavor to the shots and you won't end up with strong vodka tasting shots. You know those ones that kind of taste like medicine.. no, thanks!

Since I wanted these shots to be patriotic, I used Smirnoff Red, White, and Berry. This vodka tastes really good with the cherry and berry blue gelatins. It actually contains the flavors of cherry, citrus, and sweet blue raspberry.

If you can't find the Smirnoff brand, there's plenty of other great berry vodka options such as Kinky Blue, New Amsterdam Red Berry Vodka, Ciroc Vodka Red Berry, and Truly Wild Berry Vodka.

✽ Whipped Cream: Whipped cream will be the white part of these festive shots. It helps fit the patriotic theme and tastes great with the berry flavors! To make these Jello shots even more fun, add a few festive sprinkles to the top of the whipped cream.

How to Make Delicious Fourth of July Jello Shots

➊ In a medium bowl or large measuring cup, pour 1 cup of boiling water into 3 ounces of cherry gelatin powder. Stir the hot gelatin mixture for about 2 minutes until all of the gelatin powder is fully dissolved.

βž‹ Stir in 1 cup of room temperature berry vodka.

➌ Pour the cherry gelatin mixture evenly into 20 2-ounce plastic jello shot cups. Each cup should be a little under halfway full. Put in the fridge for about 2 hours or until fully set. I like to place all of the shots on a baking sheet or cookie sheet so they are easier to transport.

Berry Blue Jello Shots

➍ After the red gelatin has set, begin the next layer using the same process as for the cherry gelatin. In a medium mixing bowl or large measuring cup, pour 1 cup of boiling water into 3 ounces of berry blue gelatin powder. Stir for about 2 minutes until all of the gelatin powder is fully dissolved. Stir in 1 cup of room temperature berry vodka. Pour the berry blue gelatin mixture evenly on top of the set red gelatin layer into each of the plastic cups. Put in the fridge for another 2 hours or until fully set.

Red, White, and Blue Jello Shots: Questions

✽ Can I use regular vodka instead of berry vodka?

Yes, you can use regular plain vodka in place of the berry vodka.

However, I really feel like the flavored berry vodka improves the flavor of these shots quite a bit. Using flavored vodka helps eliminate that medicine-like flavor that some Jello shots have.

With that said though, the cherry and berry blue gelatins are quite flavorful on their own. The shots will still be pretty good when using regular vodka. You could also use white rum in place of the vodka.

✽ What other vodkas would be good in these red, white, and blue shots?

If you can't find the Smirnoff Red, White, and Berry vodka, no worries! There are plenty of other vodkas that would taste just as good in these shots.

Any berry type of vodka will taste great. Cherry vodka and whipped cream vodka would also taste just as good as the berry vodka.

You could also use two different flavors of vodkas as well. Just make sure you are always adding 1 cup of vodka to each 3 ounce gelatin package for a total of 2 cups of liquor for this entire recipe.

For a berry/cherry lemonade flavor, use lemon vodka instead. Really the options are endless for these shots- almost any fruity type vodka will work!

✽ Can I add more vodka than the recipe calls for?

I don't recommend adding more vodka than the recipe calls for because you may run the risk of the shots not setting properly.
