These Halloween test tube shots are so much fun, delicious, and sure to be a hit at your next Halloween party! These shots somewhat mimic what actual centrifuged blood samples look like with the separation of red blood cells and plasma. As for taste, these fun shots have the flavor of a peanut butter and jelly sandwich!
Alcoholic blood sample test tubes shots that taste like peanut butter & jelly sandwiches?! Yes, please!
Coming up with and making these test tubes shots were an absolute blast. I racked my brain for days trying to think of a clever shot I could serve up in test tubes for my favorite holiday, Halloween. And then it hit me!
If you have ever seen a centrifuged blood sample then you may know where I'm trying to go with this recipe.
Centrifuging is a way to separate molecules that have different densities by spinning them really fast around an axis. When you centrifuge a blood sample inside of a test tube, you end up with 3 layers- a bottom red layer of red blood cells, a cloudy layer of white blood cells and platelets, and a top yellow layer of plasma.
My alcoholic version of a blood sample tastes like peanut butter and jelly and the shot looks somewhat like a real centrifuged blood sample. All the liquors have different densities like blood components so they will float on top of each other. It's like a boozy science experiment!
Not only is this test tube shot super fun, it is also super delicious. It will no doubt be a hit with all of your party guests at your next Halloween party!

β½ Raspberry Liqueur: The dark red raspberry liqueur will give us the red color for the red blood cells. It has a higher density than the other liquors, it will sink to the bottom (just like the red blood cells in a blood sample!).
Popular brands include Chambord Raspberry Liqueur, Drillaud Creme de Framboise, and Mr Stacks Raspberry Liqueur.
β½ Irish Cream: For the cloudy white blood cell and platelet filled layer, I used Irish cream. It floats perfectly on top of the raspberry liqueur and gives us that creamy color in the middle.
Good brands include Kavanagh Irish Cream, Fennellys Irish Cream, Sheelin Irish Cream, and Baileys Irish Cream.
β½ Peanut Butter Whiskey: The last top layer to mimic the plasma in a blood sample will be peanut butter whiskey. It floats on top of the other two liquors and has the same yellow color.
Some of my favorite brands include Skatterbrain Peanut Butter Whiskey, Skrewball Peanut Butter Whiskey, Sheep Dog Peanut Butter Whiskey, and Shepherd's P'Nutty Peanut Butter Whiskey.
β½ Test Tubes: This recipe uses glass test tubes instead of shot glasses (though you could make this recipe in a shot glass too!). In order to get a decently sized shot, you will want to get test tubes that can hold at least 40 mL of liquid.
How to Make Halloween Blood Sample Test Tube Shots
β First thing, pour in 1/2 ounce of raspberry liqueur into the test tube.
β While tilting the test tube slightly, slowly pour 1/4 ounce Irish cream down the side of the test tube so it floats on top of the raspberry liqueur.
β Again, while tilting the test tube slightly, slowly pour 1/2 ounce peanut butter whiskey down the side of the test tube so it floats on top of the Irish cream. If some of the layers become intermixed, let the shots to sit for a few minutes allowing the liquors to separate.
I found that in some of my shots the Irish cream layer and the peanut butter whiskey layer did not 100% fully separate, but I didn't mind! The more gentle you are with your pouring, the more the layers will be separated.
The best way to hold the shots is to get either a test tube rack or put them inside a wide-mouth glass jar. I thought another great way to hold them was to put them inside of my beaker. It was so cute!
Personally, I like my shots to be cold. You can chill the test tubes in crushed ice prior to serving to get them cold and tasty!
