This blue shot recipe is one of my favorite shots ever. It's made with cream of coconut, coconut rum, and blue curacao for the most delicious flavor combination. This shot makes for the perfect addition to any summer or Fourth of July party!
Blue Coconut Heaven
These blue shots are packed full of all those fabulous summer flavors, and I'm here for it. Really, any blue cocktails with fruity flavors are a winner in my book.
If you are a coconut fan like I am then these shots are for you. Honestly, I'm considering pouring this over some ice cubes in a cocktail glass and sipping on it instead of shooting it down. It's so flavorful, and I want to savor all the goodness.
These coconut shots are perfect for a hot day and a great way to relax on those long weekends such as labor day, memorial day, or fourth of july!
This is a super simple recipe that only has three ingredients- blue curacao, cream of coconut, and coconut rum. If desired, you can rim the shot glass with sweetened coconut flakes too, but it's not required. The shot will taste great either way.
Let's get into this shot goodness!
Blue Coconut Shots Ingredients

✽ Blue Curaçao Liqueur: I haven't always kept blue curacao on hand, but that changed quickly once I was introduced to its vibrant blue color and lovely citrusy flavor. This will give these shots that classic blue coconut look and provide some flavor as well. I used Mr. Stacks Blue Curacao for these shots, but DeKuyper Blue Curacao liqueur is another popular brand.
✽ Coconut Rum: Ahh, the taste of coconut rum. It tastes just like the beach which I absolutely love. The coconut rum will give these shots all of the coconut taste. I've never met a coconut rum that I didn't like, but Malibu Coconut Rum is one of the most popular brands. Some other favorites are Parrot Bay, Bacardi, and Captain Morgan.
✽ Cream of Coconut: Make sure you are using 'cream of coconut' and not 'coconut cream.' The cream of coconut will add in a bit of sweetness and some authentic coconut flavors.
✽ Sweetened Coconut Flakes: The shredded coconut is not an essential ingredient and completely optional. It does, however, make the shots a little more fun and delicious. You can rim the edge of the shot glass with the coconut or you could just sprinkle a little bit directly on top of the shot.
How to Make Blue Coconut Shots
➊ In a cocktail shaker, combine two ice cubes, 1.5 ounces blue curacao, 1.5 ounces coconut rum, and 1 ounce cream of coconut. Shake until chilled, about 10 seconds.
➋ If desired, dip the rim of the shot glasses into a bit of cream of coconut and then into a pile of sweetened coconut flakes. The best way may be to use your hands to press the flakes onto the glass.
You can either surround the entire rim with coconut or just put the coconut flakes on one side of the shot glass. Another option (and easier option) would be to sprinkle a small bit of coconut flakes on top of the shot right before taking it.
➌ Strain the blue coconut shot into the prepared shot glasses. Cheers!
Blue Shots Recipe: Questions & Information
✽ Coconut Cream vs. Cream of Coconut
They are not the same and not interchangeable!
Coconut cream is super thick. It tastes of coconut but does not have any sugar in it. The coconut cream is the stuff that is scraped off the top of chilled coconut milk. It can be used in many recipes such as curry and desserts.
Cream of Coconut, on the other hand, is almost like syrup. It is coconut cream with sugar added to it so it is very sweet. It reminds me of sweetened condensed milk with a coconut flavor to it. Cream of coconut is a popular drink ingredient. It's called for a lot in tropical cocktails such as in a piña colada.
✽ What is blue curacao?
Blue curacao is made from a Laraha fruit's dried peel. The Laraha is known as the 'golden orange of Curacao.'
The thing is though, this liqueur would be colorless if it weren't for the fact that blue food coloring is added. Yep, blue curacao doesn't not come from some amazing blue fruit. Bummer.
The blue coloring was added simply for marketing purposes to add an exotic feel to the alcohol.
As for taste, blue curacao has an orange flavor and is very similar to the orange liqueur, Triple Sec.
✽ Blue Kamikaze Shot
When people think of blue shots, the blue kamikaze shot usually pops into their head. This shot is actually very different than this blue coconut shot except for the fact that blue curacao is also in there making everything blue!
If you want to try the blue kamikaze recipe while you have your blue curacao out, simply mix 1 part vodka, 1 part blue curacao, and 1 part lime juice. Serve with a slice of lime.
