Mango Mexican Candy Shots with Tamarind Vodka

I am absolutely addicted to dried chili mango slices. One of my friends introduced me to them a couple years ago, and I haven't stopped eating them since. I also really love other Mexican hard candy such as those mango suckers covered in chile powder. The sweetness of the mango and the slight spiciness and savoriness of the chili powder pairs so well together.

I had seen the Mexican candy shots made with watermelon pucker, but I really wanted to try out a recipe that used mango instead. So here we are! These shots are quickly becoming my new favorite shot.

These shots are extra tasty because they are made with tamarind vodka. If you've never had it before, I highly recommend it! It's a great liquor to have on hand for all of you that love those mild spicy flavors and spicy drinks.

The tamarind vodka is mixed with some mango juice and lime juice for a nice sweet and tart combination. And of course, the shot glass rim is covered in delicious Tajin- a chili lime seasoning.

This Mexican lollipop shot recipe would be the perfect addition to any party but especially great for Cinco de Mayo!

✽ Smirnoff Tamarind Vodka: This tamarind vodka make these shots so delicious and is a very important component to this recipe. It's a wonderful balance of sweet, spicy, and sour.

✽ Mango Nectar: I love mango nectar by itself, but when mixed with these other ingredients, it's even better. I like to use Jumex Mango Nectar when making these shots.

✽ Lime Juice: A bit of lime juice makes these shots slightly tart. Freshly squeezed lime juice will give you the best results.

✽ Tajin: Tajin is a seasoning made with chili peppers, lime, and sea salt. Instead of a sugared rim, I decided to go with a Tajin rim on the shot glasses. It tastes great when paired with mangos!

Mango Mexican Lollipop Candy Shot: Questions

✽ What is tamarind?

Tamarind is a fruit pod (legume) from a tamarind tree. The tree is native to north Africa and Asia and widely cultivated in India.

The pods are filled with a dark brown sticky pulp that is usually made into a paste, juice, or concentrate.

Ripe tamarind tastes slightly sour and sweet. The tartaric acid in tamarind contributes to the sourness and is also found in other common fruits. Some people describe tamarind tasting a bit like a mix of lemons, apricots, and dates.

Tamarind is used in many different dishes around the world such as Pad Thai, chutneys, curries, and pickles. It is also found in Worcestershire sauce and many different types of drinks.

✽ What is tamarind vodka?

Tamarind vodka is a vodka flavored with tamarind made by Smirnoff. It's a great addition to add to mango or watermelon juice. It's also really good mixed into a Bloody Mary, a lime and soda, and a Moscow Mule. It is slightly spicy and sour with a bit of sweetness to it.

✽ Can I substitute watermelon for mango in this recipe?

Yep! You can use fresh watermelon juice instead of mango juice. It tastes very good as a watermelon shot too especially when you garnish with a piece of watermelon fruit!

In fact, you can use a variety of fruit juice for this shot such as guava juice, pineapple juice, apricot juice, and orange juice!

✽ What is another variation of a Mexican candy shot?

A popular variation of a Mexican candy drink is a combination of watermelon juice, silver tequila, and hot sauce (such as Tabasco sauce). I find that about 4-5 oz watermelon juice, 2 oz tequila, and a couple dashes of hot sauce makes a great drink. The addition of hot sauce adds a bit of a kick which I love. Oh, and lastly, garnish with a lime wedge.

For a more sour shot, you could replace the watermelon juice with watermelon schnapps or watermelon pucker. Try 1/2 oz silver tequila mixed with 1 oz watermelon pucker and a dash or two of hot sauce for a sweet, sour, and mildly spicy tequila shot.
